Did you know that the majority of people who lose weight on a diet will end up gaining the weight back within one to three years? Why is that? Well the answer is simple. If you lose weight by dieting and then you go back to your old way of eating you are just going to pack the pounds back on. After all, it was the foods and portions you were originally eating which caused you to get fat in the first place.
Do you want to have a fit body for a long time? Then you need to choose an eating lifestyle that matches your weight loss diet. You can usually be a little more liberal in your food choices once you have reached your goal weight but you will basically be on the same eating plan for the rest of your life. That is why it is so important to find an eating lifestyle that you can enjoy for years. The low carb lifestyle is a great way to eat healthy meals long term.
What Foods Not To Eat When Dieting
The idea behind a low carb diet is that you will limit the amount of sugars and starches you eat every day. Starch is a type of carbohydrate that is easily converted into its sugar bases. When we digest foods our intestines allow sugar molecules to pass into our blood stream. As you can imagine, eating table sugar or any other sweetener like high fructose corn syrup will be easily digested. This extra sugar in our body can then be easily converted into fat.
Starchy foods are comprised of molecules which are made up of a long string of sugar molecules all bonded together. When we eat a starch, like potatoes, corn, or refined grains, these starch molecules are easily broken down and all the sugar is absorbed into our bodies. Some of these foods, like fried potatoes, will get into your blood stream almost as fast as eating raw sugar.
So the key to a successful diet is going to be limiting sugar and starchy foods. Instead, you will eat more green vegetables (they have carbs but a lot of it is in the form of fiber which can not be digested by the body),protein, fruit, and fats. The great thing about this way of eating is that it can be sustained, and keep you happy, for years.
Types Of Foods Not To Eat When Dieting
One of the worst foods you can eat when dieting is bakery products made from refined wheat. This includes white bread, rolls, and buns. Whole wheat has starch but it also has fiber and nutrients which slow down the digesting process. Refined wheat, by definition, has almost everything other than the starches removed. This means the sugars are easily released into your blood stream which can cause weight gain. Also, sugar sweeteners are often times added to bread.
Other bakery goods have an even worse one-two punch. Thing like cakes, cookies, pies, and donuts are made with highly refined flour which easily absorbed as we just saw. Also, the percentage of sugar added to these foods is very high. Between the sugar and starch from the refined flour you are going to be pounded with an increase of blood sugar. Definitely stay away from these foods.
Corn also has a very high starch level. Originally corn was a very healthy food that had a lot of nutrients besides starch. But, over the years, farmers have cross bred varieties which have a high starch content and are deficient in other nutrients. Corn is a food to stay away from if you want to lose weight.
The last group of foods not to eat when dieting are processed foods that contain sugar. It is really hard to find foods now a days that don’t have added sugar in them. This sugar is going to be absorbed quickly and will derail your weight loss plans. Most of the time the ingredient list does not say sugar. Instead, you need to look for any word that ends in “ose”. This is going to be a sugar. An example is high fructose corn syrup that seems to be added to everything.
Foods You Should Eat When Dieting
Foods which will keep your blood sugar levels in check include green vegetables, fruit (it contains sugar but is not as readily absorbed), meat, poultry and fish and whole grains. In fact, these are the foods that have always been recommended for a diet.
Once you lose the weight, just keep eating these foods and stay away from starches and sugars and you will be able to control your weight.
